Q&A

Why did you choose to enroll at UF?

I heard many great things from other students. I also wanted an online program as I work a wedding and event planner. I viewed online degree program and I liked the course curriculum and the value. At the time, I did not know the national ranking of university. I feel honored to be a part of this program and the university.

Why did you choose to major in HHP?

As a wedding and event planner, it helps me to understand the operational side, financial reporting and return of income information, and where this industry is heading in the future. It happens to be one of the fastest growing professions and tourism is recession proof.

What do you enjoy most about being a student at UF?

I learned quickly how amazing the staff is at the university. From the initial orientation, to communicating with professors and meeting other online students. Emails and club members notices sent on a regular basis help me stay informed of what’s new, events in future, and make you feel like you are part of a community. I don’t feel like I am alone which tends to happen often when you are taking online classes. I received gifts upon enrollment which were very nice. My professors communicate in a timely manner. So far, I am really enjoying my experience in this online program.

What has made your student experience unique?

Many things have helped to make me feel like I am part of a large online community. The ability to join student clubs: photography, parent/student club, and movie club. Receiving emails from different clubs, professors regarding additional resources available to us and communication with other students have really helped me to feel like I am part of an amazing network. A true unique online experience. The gifts I received initially: pen, journal, eye glass cleaning cloth, tumbler and stickers were a fun gift and made me smile.

What are your post-graduation plans?

I would like to continue in my education and apply for the Juris Doctorate with a specialization in Estate Planning. Another career I have enjoyed was selling health and life insurance plans for over 10 years. I worked with CPAs, attorneys and other financial planners. I was always intrigued and amazed at the tools available for families to start and leave a legacy for their families. I would love the opportunity to start a new career in the coming years. As Covid has taught many of us in the hospitality industry, if we have another pandemic, we could not work for 1 entire year. It’s helpful to have a second career or passion that is recession proof. Tourism is recession proof, but it has limitations during pandemics, where everyone continues to need health, dental, vision, and life insurance. I hope to be able to continue my education for 2 more years until I accomplish this goal.
