Q&A

What is your research focus?

My research is on organizational culture. Specifically, I examine organizational inclusion and exclusion, seeking to understand the experiences of people with marginalized identities, and using those insights to design more inclusive organizational cultures.

What are some of your accomplishments?

I have accumulated more than 70 international publications and presentations. My work is published in top journals such as the Journal of Business Research. I was awarded the 2017-18 Isenberg School of Management Teaching Excellence Award and the 2018-19 Isenberg School of Management Research Excellence Award. I am also a former NCAA Division I women’s basketball player and I’m in the Stetson University Athletics Hall of Fame.

What is one exciting project you are working on now?

I am writing a book called Women Do Sports: Debunking Sexist Myths About Women and Sports. The inspiration for this book was seeing women and allies constantly being attacked by social media trolls. In response, my coauthor Dave Berri and I set out to write a book that uses data-driven research to debunk the sexist myths that are spread about women and sports.

Why should a prospective student choose to major within the college of HHP?

This answer is simple. Prospective students should study at HHP for the opportunity to work with faculty like Dr. Mike Sagas. Even though I am nearly 40 years old and a decade removed from my time as a student, I still call Sagas, my former Ph.D. advisor, before making every major professional decision. Although we do not talk as often as I would like, he remains my biggest cheerleader and supporter.

How else are you involved with your community outside of the office?

I recently founded and launched ReCulture, a consulting firm specializing in designing inclusive organizations. I also routinely gives public and corporate keynote lectures, with my most recent appearances being at the World Economic Forum at Davos, SparkPost, SXSW and the University of Oklahoma Athletics. I serve as co-director for the Laboratory for Inclusion and Diversity in Sport (LIDS). I am the co-editor of Sport Business Management: An International Journal, and serve as an editorial board member for the Journal of Sport Management. I am a founding member of Wasserman's The Collective Think Tank. I also serve on the espnW College Advisory Panel and I’m a member of the United Soccer Coaches Association Board of Directors.
