HHP SEEKING STUDENTS TO MENTOR FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS | 2/9

Become a mentor!
We are looking for candidates who are responsible, hard-working, outgoing, warm, friendly, etc., and who have a strong passion for being of service to others. Interested students must be a junior, senior or graduate student who will be enrolled in classes during the fall and spring semesters of the 2009-10 school year. A 3.0 minimum GPA is required.

About the Mentor-Mentee Program
Founded by the HHP Ambassadors, the Mentor-Mentee Program at HHP aims to match a new HHP student (mentee) with an upperclassman (mentor). The mentor will be able to help the mentee adjust to life at UF, offer advice on a variety of topics and serve as an academic and social role model. Another main goal of the program is to create a family-like atmosphere at HHP and help connect the students to the college as soon as they arrive. The selected upperclassmen will serve as a mentor for the academic year.

Application process
Students will fill out an application and submit a photo, résumé, essay and an evaluation form from a UF faculty/staff member or supervisor. Applications will be accepted until Aug. 3, 2009. Applications should be turned into Michele Dye in FLG 246.

Mentor selection process
Applications will be reviewed by the HHP Ambassadors. Candidates will be narrowed down and invited to participate in Round One of the selection process.

Round One will be a group interview with all of the mentor candidates. Those who advance to Round Two will have an individual interview.

New mentors will attend an orientation session and will receive materials about HHP and answers to frequently asked questions. All mentors will be required to participate in Brown Bag Lunch Meetings, held twice a month at the Florida Gym Conference Room. These meetings will allow the Ambassadors Mentor-Mentee Committee to check in with the mentors and find out what they are doing with their mentees and will provide a roundtable discussion of ideas and how to handle certain situations.

Pairing Process
Once selected, mentors will fill out an informational sheet. Mentees will be given the same form and will be paired up based on major and/or common interests.

Mentor Responsibilities

  • Attend Brown Bag Lunches twice a month on Thursdays at 12:30 p.m. during the fall and spring semesters
