Eta Sigma Gamma to kick off helmet campaign | 9/28

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Eta Sigma Gamma will kick off its Scooter-Helmet Awareness Campaign 2009 on Oct. 1 with an awareness concert at the Reitz Union Amphitheater. The concert will include a performance by Chris McCarty. Shands Trauma Unit will set-up an information booth, and New Scooters 4 Less will raffle off several scooter helmets.

The purpose of Scooter-Helmet Awareness Campaign 2009 is to increase the number of UF students who wear helmets when driving scooters through the use of positive reinforcement and personal testimonies. Efforts to support this campaign will be shared by Eta Sigma Gamma, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Student Government, Gator Watch, UPD, GPD, ASO, Shands Trauma Unit, New Scooters 4 Less, the College of Health and Human Performance as well as other community businesses. 

The Scooter-Helmet Awareness Campaign 2009 will include Eta Sigma Gamma members and UPD officers tabling at the Reitz Union North Lawn to educate UF students on the importance of wearing a helmet when driving on campus. 

In addition, positive reinforcement activities will take place at common scooter parking areas on campus, in which Eta Sigma Gamma will provide positive reinforcement to helmet-wearing scooter drivers, and friendly encouragement to non-helmet wearers to purchase and wear a helmet.  Student volunteers will pass out coupons from local businesses to reinforce the positive behavior, as well as provide information about the importance of wearing a helmet when Driving or riding a scooter.
