HHP PROFESSOR INDUCTED INTO AMERICAN ACADEMY OF KINESIOLOGY AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION | 10/1

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Dr. James A. Cauraugh was inducted into the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education on September 29, 2007. Cauraugh, a professor and associate dean in the Department of Applied Physiology and Kinesiology, was one of nine individuals inducted at the Academy’s 77th meeting in Savannah, Ga.

Since its creation in 1926, the AAKPE has inducted 450 individuals in recognition of their outstanding scholarship of physical activity.

The requirements to be named fellow in the Academy include being nominated by a current AAKPE member, having current professional and/or scientific work in kinesiology or physical education, and having demonstrated competence in this profession over a period of at least ten years.

Cauraugh’s ongoing research focuses on the mechanisms involved during motor recovery following the stroke. More than 60 percent of stroke survivors experience partial paralysis during the first year following a stroke.

Cauraugh is investigating the bimanual coordination theory coupled with active neuromuscular stimulation. Patients of this stroke rehabilitation undergo therapy involving the use of both hands simultaneously in performing the same motor movements.
