GATORS ON THE GO PROGRAM KICKS OFF | 1/27

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Gators on the Go kicks off at the Reitz Union North Lawn on Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Participants can pick up their pedometers and goody bags.

“Tomorrow will be a very exciting day for us,” said Cher Harris, program director. “We’ve been working hard to improve the program and hope everyone is satisfied.”

The last day to sign up is Friday. Those who already have signed up but cannot attend the kick off event can pick up their pedometers at Living Well, located on the east side of the football stadium.

The fee for the program is $10 and includes access to the program Web site, tracking system, health and wellness tips, healthy recipes, health calculators, a flexibility guide and guidelines for resistance training. A pedometer will be provided for those who do not have one.

Participants are required to log a minimum of 5,000 steps a day, which they track with their pedometers.

“5,000 steps really isn’t as much as it sounds,” Harris said. “You’d be surprised how much you probably walk around campus on any given day.”

Participants who are on track to reaching their goal by the middle of the program will receive a free towel, and participants who reach their goal at the end of the program also will receive a free T-shirt.

Gators on the Go, an eight-week program which ends March 30, 2005, encourages the UF community to get physically active. It is sponsored by the College of Health and Human Performance, and Living Well Faculty and Staff Fitness Center.
