Department Graduate Assistantships
Students must be admitted formally to a graduate degree program to be eligible for a graduate assistantship. Assistantships are awarded based on actual or potential teaching ability, research and technology skills, or other special expertise. Teaching assistants usually teach "HSC 2100 - Personal and Family Health", or other department courses. Research Assistants help faculty with their current research and technology projects. Graduate assistants must enroll in 9 credits during the fall and spring terms, and maintain a 3.0 grade point average, to retain an assistantship. Graduate assistants receive pay for a 25% to 74% time appointment during the fall and spring terms, as well as waivers for in-state and out-of-state tuition. Opportunities for graduate assistant appointments during the summer session exist as well.
Applications for graduate teaching assistantships and graduate fellowships are now available for AY 2011-2012. Applicants must be admitted into the HEB graduate program prior to consideration.
To apply for a Teaching Assistantship in HEB, complete the Assistantship Application form, and submit electronically to Melissa Naidu (michie@hhp.ufl.edu) with a current resume, and cover letter that includes your credentials for teaching health education & promotion courses at the undergraduate level. Teaching Assistants in HEB typically assist with Personal and Family Health (HSC 3102) and Health & Medical Terminology (HSC 3537). Depending on their background and experience, and department need, teaching assistants may also teach other courses. Assistantship decisions are made by the Department Chair in consultation with the Graduate Program Coordinator, Undergraduate Program Coordinator, and Undergraduate Program Advisor, and are based on the applicant’s qualifications matched with department teaching needs.
All applications received by Feb 15, 2011 will be given full consideration. For further information contact Dr.R. Morgan Pigg (rmpigg@hhp.ufl.edu) or Melissa Naidu (michie@hhp.ufl.edu) or call 352-392-0583.

Florida Education Fund's McKnight Doctoral Fellowship Program http://www.fefonline.org/
Up to 50 Fellowships (renewable for up to five years) are granted each year to students pursuing a doctoral degree at one of 9 participating institutions in the State of Florida. Each Fellowship consists of $17,000 per year in tuition, fees, and stipend.
PURPOSE: The McKnight Doctoral Fellowship program is designed to address the under-representation of African American and Hispanic faculty at colleges and universities in the state of Florida by increasing the pool of citizens qualified with Ph.D. degrees to teach at the college and university levels. As a by-product, it is expected that employment opportunities in industry will also be expanded.
THE AWARD: Up to 50 Fellowships are awarded annually to study at one of the nine participating Florida universities. Each award provides annual tuition up to $5,000 (tuition above this amount is waived by the participating institution) for each of three academic years plus an annual stipend of $12,000. (An additional two years of support at this same level is provided by the participating institution.)
Each annual renewal is contingent upon satisfactory performance and normal progress toward the Ph.D. degree.
