NORMA M. LEAVITT ENDOWED PH.D. FELLOWSHIP

Dr. Norma M. Leavitt was on the faculty of the College for 28 years prior to her retirement in 1981. She first came to Gainesville in 1953 to chair the Department of Required Physical Education for Women, a position she held until 1962 when she moved to the Department of Professional Curriculum. Dr. Leavitt was a master teacher who accepted nothing but the best from her students. Her goal was to create highly competent professionals.

The Norma M. Leavitt Ph.D. Fellowship is a one year award for an incoming Ph.D. students into the Department of Applied Physiology & Kinesiology. A Department faculty member must nominate potential candidates for the fellowship. The nominated candidate will be required to provide (a) a letter of intent and (b) two letters of recommendation to the departmental office. Female applicants are highly considered. A selection committee formed by the Department Chair will determine the recipient. Selection criteria include:

  • Strength of training (as evidenced by academic, extracurricular, and/or research accomplishments) and intentions as a doctoral student
  • Letter of intent (no more two pages)
  • Two letters of recommendation
