Biography:

Delores C.S. James, Ph.D., is an alumna of the College of Health and Human Performance, having received both her master’s and doctoral degrees from the Department of Health Education and Behavior. After completing her education, she accepted a teaching position with HHP.

James is both a health educator and a registered dietitian with extensive background in public health and private practice. She is a fellow in the American School Health Association and the Weight Management Practice Group of the American Dietetic Association. She recently completed a three-year term as the Professional Issues Delegate for Research in the House of Delegates of the American Dietetic Association.  She also is past president of the Gainesville District Dietetic Association. James is a prolific author. In addition to her publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals, she has published several creative works. She was the editor-in-chief for a two-volume encyclopedia, Nutrition and Well-Being A to Z (2004).

Throughout her academic career, she has engaged in research focused on understanding the socio-cultural causes of health disparities, particularly African Americans, low income children and adolescents, and residents of rural communities. James’s also has extensive training in program evaluation and qualitative research methodologies.   

James has been recognized by her colleagues for her teaching and research. In 2000, James was named Teacher of the Year for HHP, and has received the Faculty Research Award from HEB four times in the past 10 years. In addition to her research and teaching, James dedicates her time to serve on numerous advisory groups on campus and the Gainesville community.

  • • Obesity and weight management, health disparities, health literacy, nutrition education technology, and cancer education. .
