Biography:

Heather Hausenblas, Ph.D.,  first came to the University of Florida in 1998. Since then, she has been the Director of the Exercise Psychology Laboratory, taught courses in exercise psychology, and conducted research on the psychological effects of physical activity in a variety of special populations. 
Hausenblas has extensive research experience. She has received funding from the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association for her research examining physical activity determinants and behaviors in pregnant and postpartum women. She has published more than 70 peer-reviewed journal articles. In 2006, she was a recipient of the University of Florida Research Foundation Professorship.

  • In 1998, Hausenblas received the Sport Science Award of the International Olympic Committee. She also has been the recipient of the Early Career Distinguished Scholar Award from the North American Society for the Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity (2005), and the Dorothy V. Harris Memorial Award receipt for outstanding early career development in sport and exercise psychology from the Association for the Advancement of Applied Sport Psychology (2003).

Research Interests:

  • Psychological effects of physical activity in pregnant and postpartum women.
    The utility of the theory of planned behavior for explaining and predicting physical activity behavior.
    The cognitive, behavioral and affective components of body image and eating, and their relationship to exercise in special populations (e.g., eating disordered patients, overweight women, pregnant women, exercise dependent people).
