APK Transfer Admission Information

The Department of Applied Physiology and Kinesiology is concerned with quality of life and the many aspects of human movement. Significant research contributions, education and service are related to the study of physiological and psychological responsiveness to vigorous and relevant physical activities. In addition, movement skills capabilities and ways to improve skills and maintain health are determined for the typical person, the person who is disabled and the high-level athlete. Sites for research, student experience and employment include educational institutions, health and fitness centers, businesses and industries, and health agencies and organizations.

The Department of Applied Physiology and Kinesiology offers two majors, Applied Physiology and Kinesiology (BS-APK) and Athletic Training (BS-AT). The major of Applied Physiology and Kinesiology has two different curriculums, or specializations. Depending upon their academic interests, career goals, and academic capabilities, APK majors select either the exercise physiology or fitness wellness specialization when completing the BS-APK degree. The athletic training major is a limited access program, accredited by CAATE. Its accreditation status allows athletic training students an opportunity to sit for the Board of Certification (BOC) examination to be certified as an athletic trainer upon completion of the degree.

Transfer admission is competitive in the College of Health and Human Performance with a few transfer admission spaces allotted to the Department of APK. For example, 7 transfer students will be admitted to the Department of Applied Physiology and Kinesiology for Fall 2009 and Spring 2010 combined. The minimum GPA for transfer admission consideration is a 2.0 overall GPA and C’s or better in prerequisite courses. However, in reality, the average overall GPA and prerequisite GPA of competitive applicants is a 3.5 or higher.  The 2008-2009 transfer student profile was a  3.7 or higher overall GPA (all attempts – all institutions) and a 3.7 or higher prerequisite GPA (grade of B or better in all prerequisite courses). Additional admission considerations are 1) a well written Letter of Intent (required from all applicants), 2) a strong, consistent academic record, and 3) completion of an AA degree from a Florida institution.  Competitive applicants have all prerequisite courses completed at the time of application and/or by the application deadline for the term of admission.
