APPLICATION DEADLINES (approximations)

Note: The deadlines listed above are approximate graduate application deadlines. However, if you are applying for a graduate assistantship, all Fall application materials must be received by February 1st.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Admission standards include graduation from an accredited college or university with a minimum 3.0 (B) grade point average for the final 60 semester hours of undergraduate study and at least a 450 verbal score and 550 quantitative score on the GRE. Students from non-English speaking countries are required to present a minimum score of 550 (213 computer-based, 79 Internet-based) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language in addition to the GRE requirements. Three letters of recommendation from persons able to evaluate the applicant's aptitude for graduate work, and a personal letter of intent must be submitted with the formal application.

For conditional admissions a student must meet at least one of the minimum admissions standards (450 verbal score and 550 quantitative score on the GRE or 3.0 upper division GPA). Departmental policy requires that a student take the GRE at least twice to be considered conditional. The application is first approved by the specialization committee, then submitted to the conditional committee. The number of conditional admits cannot exceed 10% of the department’s graduate enrollment.

Admission to the program will be based upon the following criteria:

  1. GRE score, undergraduate grade point average, TOEFL score (for students from non-English speaking countries)
  2. Three letters of recommendation
  3. The student's letter of intent
  4. Compatibility of applicant's education, experience and research interest with the mission of the program
  5. Compatibility of the applicant's background and interests with those of an available advisor
  6. Teaching, research and other departmental needs in cases where departmental financial support is requested.

PROCEDURES FOR ADMISSION

A student's file must be complete before it is reviewed by the specialization committee.
It must include:

  1. Completed online application form and graduate profile (sent to Graduate Coordinator)
  2. Official transcripts from all colleges and universities previously attended. (Submit to both the Admissions Office and the department.)
  3. A minimum grade point average of 3.0 for all upper division undergraduate work
  4. Official GRE scores.
  5. Students from non-English speaking countries: a minimum TOEFL score of 550, 213 computer based, 79 Internet-based.
  6. A letter of intent explaining the student's career goals, areas of research interest, and reasons for selection of the College of Health and Human Performance for graduate study. (The letter is sent directly to the Graduate Coordinator, Department of Applied Physiology and Kinesiology, PO Box 118205, University of Florida, Gainesville FL 32611)
  7. Three letters of recommendation sent directly to the Graduate Coordinator of the Department. (At least one recommendation should be completed by a faculty member at the last institution attended).

Once an applicant's file is complete, it is reviewed by the specialization committeeindicated on the application. To be accepted the majority of the specialization committee must approve the application for admission based on criteria previously listed, AND at least one member must be available to act as advisor. For Ph.D. applicants,a graduate faculty member who has been approved for doctoral directive status must bewilling to act as the advisor, or co-advisor.
